Plain answers
Ask before
you book.
We would rather answer an awkward question now than take money from someone who expected a different service.
What a session is
What am I allowed to bring up?
Almost anything: work, family, a relationship, money worries, grief, illness, loneliness, something you have never said aloud, or a week that was simply hard. You do not need a diagnosis or a reason that feels serious enough. A listener publishes the subjects they welcome and any they do not take before you book.
Is there anything I cannot talk about?
Very little. The limits are about what a listener can safely do, not about whether your feelings are acceptable. A listener cannot help plan harm, take part in sexual content, diagnose, treat or give medical, legal or financial instructions. You can talk about suicidal feelings, self-harm or abuse; those disclosures do not get you removed. Immediate danger changes what the listener must do.
Are listeners therapists?
No. They are trained to listen, and that is a different role. They do not diagnose or treat, and they must not describe this service as therapy or counselling. A verified qualification may appear on a profile, but the person is still acting only as a listener in this service.
How long is a session?
The planned options are fixed-duration sessions shown before booking. You may end early at any point. A safety exit never requires an explanation.
How much does it cost?
Listeners set separate text and audio rates inside published limits. You will see the exact session total before paying, with no surprise fee afterwards. Paid booking remains closed while the launch safeguards and payment setup are completed.
What actually happens in the session?
You talk and they listen. There is no forced agenda, worksheet or homework. Some people arrive with something specific; some talk about the week; some need silence first. If the session starts becoming advice, diagnosis or the listener's own story, you can say so or leave.
What if I do not know what to say?
Say exactly that. It is a common way to begin. A trained listener should not interrogate you into producing a topic or make you perform distress.
Can I book the same person again?
Yes, once bookings open. If paid sessions start becoming your only human contact, a responsible listener should name that gently without shaming or rejecting you.
Safety and privacy
Is this a crisis service?
No. Just Listen does not watch rooms in real time and cannot reach you between sessions. In immediate danger call 999. In England, call NHS 111 and choose the mental-health option for urgent support. Samaritans is free on 116 123 at any hour.
Is what I say private?
The room is limited to the talker and listener. Text is kept for the stated retention period so participants can read it and concerns can be investigated. Staff access must be tied to a permitted case reason and logged. Demo text is short-lived and must not contain real personal or health information.
Are calls recorded?
No. There is no recording or transcription feature. WebRTC encrypts the audio between the two browsers. The service may retain technical facts such as when a call began, ended or failed, but not what was said.
Will the listener know who I am?
They see the display name you choose for the session. They do not need your private email, home address, payment details or unrelated booking history.
What if something goes wrong?
Leave or end the session. The controls remain visible throughout. Use the safety-report route if you want a human review. A listener must not retaliate, contact you elsewhere or pressure you not to report.
What happens after I report something?
A person reviews it. Immediate-risk reports are prioritised. You should receive a reference and an outcome, although another person's private account information cannot be disclosed to you.
Listeners
How do I know a listener is safe?
Applicants face written learning, a high-threshold assessment, unseen cases, a simulated session, oral defence, identity and eligibility checks, human approval and a probation period. None of that makes risk impossible, which is why session controls, reports and ongoing review remain necessary.
Have listeners been criminal-record checked?
A profile will state only checks that were actually completed and legally available for that role. Just Listen will not imply that everyone holds an enhanced DBS check when the legal eligibility position has not been confirmed.
Why might a listener be marked as on probation?
Every newly approved listener starts with tighter limits and review. It is a transparent quality-control stage, not a secret warning.
Why might a listener have no rating?
Very small numbers produce misleading averages. A rating is not shown until enough eligible completed sessions exist.
Can I become a listener?
Adults in England may apply if they are prepared for demanding learning, assessment and human review. An application does not create a public profile or permission to accept bookings.
Money
Can I get a refund?
The intended policy is free cancellation more than 12 hours ahead, a partial refund inside 12 hours, and a full refund for listener cancellation, no-show, qualifying technical failure or a safety exit. The final checkout will display the binding rule before payment.
What if I cannot afford it?
Do not pay for this instead of food, energy or essentials. The community and crisis routes are free. Paid listening is optional and is not a substitute for NHS or local support.
Why does Just Listen keep 18%?
The planned platform share funds moderation, safeguarding, assessment, payment operations and the site. The listener receives 82% before payment-processing costs. The split is shown openly and still requires final legal/commercial approval before live charging.
Just Listen is not emergency or crisis care. In immediate danger call 999. Samaritans is available on 116 123, free, at any hour.
